Starting in May the "Flagship" numbers 001/002 are transferred to HND from NRT (with the cessation of the YYZ-NRT route).

Previously 005/006.

Interesting, I guess I have been out of the loop as I see there are no more NRT flights from YYZ. They are trying to route you through YUL, YYC or YVR to get to NRT.
I see YYZ only does HND nonstop now. What a change from a few from a years ago that HND was so hard to get into and now it is the preference of many!

I think that NRT is still slot constrained, and it (the slot) was swapped out to YUL. HND is equally as difficult (if not more so) for a foreign carrier to secure rights to. AC was granted a gem of a spot at HND.

Thanks for the update and link. Just read that NRT will get a new runway soon too.

Didn't AC inherit and continue these flight numbers from CP?

I suspect soon still means 5-10 years away.

Looking back at a Canadian timetable from April 1991:

CP1 YYZ-NRT-HKG 1- - 4 - - - D10
CP1 YYZ-NRT - - - - - 6 - D10
CP2 HKG-NRT-HKG - - 3 - 5- - D10
CP2 NRT-YYZ - - - - - 6 - D10

CP3&4 was YYZ-YVR-NRT and back
CP5&6 was YVR-NRT and back
CP7&8 was YYZ-YVR-HKG-BKK or YYZ-YVR-TPE-HKG
CP9&10 was YVR-NGO and back
CP15&16 was YYC-YEG-NRT and back
CP27&28 was YYZ-HNL and back
CP33&34 was YVR-HNL and back

CP40 - 99 was FCO, MXP, CDG, MUC, FRA, LGW, MAN
CP100-107 was MEX, LIM, GIG, GRU, EZE and SCL

Perhaps the flight is really returning to HND, as presumably CP would have served HND before NRT opened in the 70s?

CP used flight 401&402 for Tokyo until 1985, when it was switched to 1&2.

I guess that means that CP and AC had no "flagship" flights back then if 1 and 2 were not being used.

I think we are relatively lucky with the time slots AC got at HND for these routes. If you look at some of the US Carriers, they have atrocious time slots

Just from the dates I've been looking at... The pricing for Premium Economy is sometimes $3000+. Yes, I know, demand and the timing is excellent. I've done the route 3 times, and love staying at a nearby hotel when I have a 6-12 hour layover.

I'd love to go to Tokyo again, but can't at those prices. Cheaper for me to fly to any nearby location (HKG/ICN/TPE) and then book a separate ticket.

Great benefit of HND besides its proximity to Central Tokyo is connectivity to the "inner/city" airports at destinations with dual & multi airport status such as:

Taipei TSA
Osaka ITM

If you can hack rouge, try Premium Rouge to KIX...pretty well the same as premium Economy. I booked a YYZ-YVR-KIX, PE mainline to/from YVR, Premium Rouge YVR-KIX $1511 all in vs $3000 direct YYZ-HND. Yeah, I will take a stop over for 1500 bucks and help myself to some food and drinks in the lounge.

I am not interested in flying to Tokyo in Y, but I will only go so high for PE and when they want 3 grand plus, forget it.
